Allen, Charles Grant Blairfindie

Charles Grant Blairfindie Allen (Feb 24, 1848 – Oct 25, 1899) — Canadian science writer and novelist, promoter of evolution, Oxford-educated, and pioneer of early science fiction. Author of The Woman Who Did, The Evolution of the Idea of God, and The British Barbarians; noted for controversial views on marriage, religion, and time-travel fiction. Great‑grandson of a United Empire Loyalist.

Alguire, Duncan Orestes

Meet Duncan Orestes Alguire (Aug 13, 1853 – May 4, 1925) — physician and Conservative MP for Stormont (elected Sept 21, 1911; served 1911–1917). McGill medicine graduate (1873), he combined medical practice with public service during a pivotal era in Canadian politics. Alger, Harry Elliott

Meet Harry Elliott Alger (Apr 8, 1924 – Jan 27, 2010) — Alberta MLA (1982–1989) for the Progressive Conservatives. Elected in a high-profile 1982 race defeating Gordon Kesler, he secured re‑election in 1986 and retired in 1989. Alger, Ross Patterson

Meet Ross Patterson Alger (Aug 20, 1920 – Jan 16, 1992) — Calgary’s 31st mayor (1977–1980). Born in Prelate, SK, he earned a B.Comm (Univ. of Alberta), served in the RCAF in WWII, and completed an MBA at the University of Toronto before settling in Calgary as an accountant. Public service: school trustee (later chairman), alderman (1971–1974), mayor (1977–1980). Major achievements: CTrain’s first leg, Calgary’s bid for the XV Olympic Winter Games, and planning for the Olympic coliseum. Diagnosed with cancer in 1985, he died in 1992. #CalgaryHistory #YYC #CTrain

Aikman, Hugh Bowlby Wilson

Meet Hugh Bowlby Wilson Aikman — lawyer, Gold Rush hopeful turned Vancouver Island settler. Trained in law at Upper Canada College, he came west for the Cariboo Gold Rush but stayed in Victoria. After years in practice, he became B.C.’s registrar-general in 1871 at age 35. He lived at the scenic Gables on Gorge Road and is buried at Ross Bay Cemetery — pictured in an unmarked grave in front of the headstone. Aikman, Frederick Alan “Butch”

Meet Frederick Alan “Butch” Aikman DFC & Bar (Mar 5, 1919 – Mar 21, 1991) — a Canadian RAF fighter ace credited with at least nine enemy aircraft destroyed. After joining No. 154 Squadron in 1942, he flew as Wing Commander Paddy Finucane’s wingman during the sortie when Finucane was lost over the Channel. Aikman scored most of his victories in North Africa and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in Feb 1943. Honoring a brave wartime aviator. #WWII #RAF #CanadianHeroes

Adams, Marilla

Meet Marilla Adams — a trailblazing Canadian artist & educator (b. 1864, Zorro, Canada West). Trained at Alma College, Ontario School of Art, New York’s School of Design and the Art Association of Montreal, she taught in Iowa, studied in Europe, and returned to Montréal around WWI. There she taught weaving and woodcarving to wounded soldiers and championed charities aiding the underprivileged. Died Nov 2, 1966.   • Born in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
  • 1921 census, with wife and three children
  • Presented the Winslow Papers at first Victoria UE Meeting.
  • Edward was manager of Royal Trust in Victoria.
  • Lost son in WW 2 due to training accident in England.
  • Famous ancestor, Mayflower by same name who became first Governor of Massachusetts.
  • Buried at Royal Oak Cemetery. 
  • Loyalist Ancestor: Edward Winslow, 1745-1815, Kingsclear, N.B.

  • Worked for the Post office in Winnipeg for many years. Came to Victoria after 1911 census but cannot find in 1921 Census. Death date is after March 1932. 
  • Very active in the local arts community. Member of Victoria and Island Branch of the Canadian Authors Association and the Island Craft Club. 
  • Lived at 985 St. Patrick Street, Victoria.
  • Likely buried at Royal Oak Burial Park with no dates. 
  • UE Loyalist Ancestor: David Titus Simons, 1743-1824, From Enfield, Hartford, Connecticut and lived at West Flamborough Township, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada.

  • Mother of Virginia Ross who was an Early Member. Virginia was a Secretary on Executive in 1937. Mrs. Ross was on Executive. Resigned in 1939.
