Stirtan, Josiah

  • 1847 – 1926
  • Born in Cardinal, Ontario. He left Ontario in 1869 and established a footwear factory and a tannery in Victoria. He also had mining interests in the Omenica region of northern B.C.
  • By 1879, Josiah was the engineer responsible for the construction of Nanaimo’s first waterworks system. He was a director of the British Columbia Tanning Company and a justice of the peace. By 1908, he had relocated to Richmond where he had a 20-passenger tourist bus service from downtown Vancouver hotels to Stanley Park.
