  • JOHN SMALL, United Empire Loyalist, came to the Island of St. John in 1790 after having lived seven years in New Brunswick.
  • He was born in Philadelphia in 1756, the son of Johannes Willelmus von Der Schmall (1731-1795) and his wife, Mary, who died in New York. “My Dear and Loving Mother Mary Small Departed This Life, In New York on Sunday Evening About Sunset The 29 Day of December in theYear of Our Lord And only Savior 1782 And She Was Buried In St. Paul’s Church Yard”. Then follows a description of the exact location of her grave.
