- John Ryckman Sr. (1740-1784) was a descendant of Dutch pioneer Herman Janse Ryckman who arrived in Albany circa 1666-67. A tanner and shoemaker living in Tapan, Orange County, John Ryckman married Suzannah Broun (Bruyn) 12 June 1760 in Hackensack, New Jersey and had land in Bergen County. Aged 36 at the Declaration of Independence, Ryckman was imprisoned for his loyalty and joined the British Army at New York in 1777. He served as a guide during the war and with the Indian Department. He also owned a house in New York. The Ryckman family may have arrived in Canada in 1780 or 81. They do not appear on New York embarkation lists. John Sr. died either at Sorel or en route to Adolphustown. John senior’s eldest son was also an Associated Loyalist and settled with Van Alstine. Sons Edward and John Jr. were considered too young for Loyalist status.
