Roaf, James Richardson

  • President of United Empire Loyalists’ Association of Canada – Toronto Branch, (1935 – 37).
  • Although nearing his 90th birthday, James Richardson Roaf, K.C., veteran lawyer and one of Toronto’s best known church laymen last night registered for attendance, as official delegate from St. Paul’s Anglican Church, at his 55th session of Toronto Synod.
  • Born on Charles street in August, 1851, he has seen many changes in Toronto. He enjoyed relating last night how he could remember seeing the parish hall, where the Synod opened its deliberations to-day, under actual construction.
  • “There was a parochial school here before that and I can just recall that building; I was only a kid then,” he stated.
  • His grandfather, James Richardson, fought in the war of 1812, and his great-grandfather, John Roaf, was with Lord Nelson on his flagship H.M.S. Victory.
  • In the last war every male descendant of his family served in the Empire in some capacity, he says.
  • “In this war I have a collection of grandsons and at least one granddaughter in the service,” he said. His granddaughter is serving in ARP work in England.
