- Born in Annapolis, Nova Scotia, He attended Bishop’s College in Lennoxville, Quebec and then McGill in Montreal. He came west for the attraction of the Cariboo Gold Rush. He was still there in the Cariboo for the 1881 census where he is listed as a school master.
- He left the Cariboo poor, and while working his passage on a ship that caught fire, ended up penniless in Seattle. At that point, he got a job as a clerk and invested all his earnings in real estate.
- He became a lumber mill owner and real estate developer and is considered an influential pioneer of Seattle. He developed the landmark Butler Hotel and the major Woodland Park estate.
