  • Thomas W. PETERS, ex-mayor of the City of St. John, who has been in poor health or some time and who during the past week developed symptoms which pointed to a fatal result of his illness, died unexpectedly at his home Paddock Street at 9 o’clock Saturday eve. He was in conversation with his physician and wife and had just spoken in a cheerful tone in reply to some question of the medical man, when he suddenly expired. Deceased was a barrister-at-law and was born in this city in 1848 and was the son of Thomas W. Peters and Mary McMONAGLE of U.E. loyalist stock. He received his education at the schools of St. John, after which he entered the Cambridge law school from which institution he graduated and engaged in the practice of his profession in this city. He was prominent in municipal affairs and was elected coucillor for Wellington and was in April 1882 and so continued until 1884, when he was elected alderman for the same ward, which office he held until 1891, when he was elected mayor of the city. He occupied this position until 1894, when he was succeeded by the present incumber, Mayor Robertson. In 1886 he was elected warden of the municipal council and in 1887 he was re-elected and again occupied the position. He was also chairman of the finance and treasury board and member and chairman of legislation, also president of the Exhibition association since 1892 and member of the Board of School Trustees since 1888. The deceased belonged to the Masonic fraternity, the I.O.O.F. and Knights of Pythias. He was senior warden in the Masonic order and representative of the grand lodge in the I.O.O.F. and was also chairman of the board of the Industrial Home for Boys and held offices in several of the athletic and city clubs. In politics he was a LIberal-Conservative. Mr. Peters was married in 1880 to Jennie SULLIVAN who died in 1882. In 1885 he was married to Anfonetta RODGERS d/o John RODGERS. He leaves a wife and a daughter.
