Mahood, James Adam

  • Born in St. George, Charlotte, New Brunswick and cane to B.C. with his widowed mother and two sisters.
  • Civil engineer who was involved in survey and exploration work though life.
  • Part of a cross Canada survey that was then to go up the coast to the Behring sea, across Siberia and to Europe. He was a major in the Siberian portion.
  • Also surveyed for a rail line across the Rockies and the Cariboo to the Coast. Mahood Falls is Wells Gray Provincail Park is named for him.

  • Mahood Falls is a waterfall in Wells Gray Provincial Park located on the Canim River between Canim Lake and Mahood Lake and northeast of 100 Mile House, British Columbia, Canada. The waterfall is 30 m (98 ft) high.
  • Mount Mahood was named in 1871 for James Adams Mahood, a CPR engineer and land surveyor. It is located in the Victoria Cross Ranges in Alberta.
  • Mahood Lake named c1872 after James Adams Mahood ( -1901), land surveyor, who surveyed the CPR route from Quesnel mouth to Yellowhead in 1871; undoubtedly the course of his survey and reconnaisance took him through the valleys of Canim and Mahood Lakes. He surveyed in all corners of the province from 1871 to 1891. “Mahood Lake” is mentioned in connection with travels 18 September 1872 (CPR’s “Report of Progress on Explorations & Surveys to January 1874” by Sanford Fleming, engineer in charge).
