William Otis Hughes, 1847-1910
- Born in Digby, Digby, Nova Scotia.
- In the 1891 census, had just moved to Victoria, 43 years, living in Yates Street Ward. Has Ship Masters certificate.
- Master of sealing vessel Carmelite when it was seized by Russians in 1892. William and his crew were taken to Petropavlovsk & then to Vladivostok. He was 17 days on a Russian war ship, then sent to Nagasaki. Returned to Victoria on the Empress of Japan.
- Entered service with the Canadian Pacific Navigation Company.
- Married in 1898 to 38-year-old widow Adeline. Also had children from previous marriage. He was 51. lived at 61, 2nd avenue, Victoria.
- In 1901 census, master mariner, Kitty from previous marriage, two of Adeline’s sons and son with Adeline. In 1949 and 1959, Kenneth occupation in Voter’s list was broker.
- Died while living on Blanchard St. in Victoria after being unwell for about a year since he fell into the hatch of his ship the previous year. Loyalist Ancestor: Isaac Titus, 1747-1818, Nova Scotia
