William Arthur Carlyle

William Arthur Carlyle,  1862-1947

  • Born in  Hamilton, Hamilton, Ontario.
  • Graduated in mining engineering at McGill University. 
  • B.C. ‘s first Provincial Mineralogist and organizer of the bureau of mines in 1895. Resigned in 1898 to become engineer of charge of mines in Rossland. 
  • Founding member of the Canadian Institute of Mines and Metallurgy.
  • Grand nephew of Thomas Carlyle. Brother of Artist Florence Carlyle in National Gallery
  • Manager of Rio Tinto mine in Spain. William, his wife and two children were part of the 1911 England census living in Wimbledon. 
  • In Obituary, family home was  950 St. Charles Street. 
  • Loyalist Ancestor: Arthur Youmans, 1729-1800, Kingston.
