B.C. ‘s first Provincial Mineralogist and organizer of the bureau of mines in 1895. Resigned in 1898 to become engineer of charge of mines in Rossland.
Founding member of the Canadian Institute of Mines and Metallurgy.
Grand nephew of Thomas Carlyle. Brother of Artist Florence Carlyle in National Gallery
Manager of Rio Tinto mine in Spain. William, his wife and two children were part of the 1911 England census living in Wimbledon.
