While he was born in Canada, Vernon fought for the Northern side during the American Civil War
In 1872, traveled with wife and two children from Kansas to Pacific Coast on a prairie schooner. He was made captain of the caravan, crossed the mountains using the Snoqualmie Pass which was then not even a good trail.
Buried at Royal Oak Burial Park Cemetery, Saanich.
