John Frederick Ernest Carman

Victoria UELAC Early Member: John Frederick Ernest Carman, 1871- 1943

  • Born in St. John, New Brunswick.  
  • Close relation to famous Canadian poet Bliss Carman.
  • Came west as a young man and joined historic rush to Dawson In 1898. Later joined Dept. of Municipal Affairs in Alberta Government.
  • Joined military in WW I and saw active service in Ypres, Somme and Vimy Ridge.  Cited for active bravery and won commission as Lieutenant. Wounded
  • Buried at St. Luke’s Cemetery, Saanich.
  • UE Loyalist Ancestor: Richard “The Loyalist” Carman, , 1757-1817; Settled at Manawagouish, St John, NB after Revolution.
