Jacob McDonald Hughes, 1862-1940
- Born in Keswick, York, New Brunswick.
- In the 1891 Census, Victoria, married, one child, occupation was grocer.
- In the 1911 census, 47 years, married to Cora May Miles (UE descendent) , two children, living at 1033 Burdette St. in Victoria, B.C. Occupation was City traveler (collect rents, sell goods).
- In 1902, bought a liquor license for “Queens Hotel”, north west corner of Johnson and Store.
- Was president of Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie # 12.
- 1910 article in newspaper asked “if he collected money from Chinatown so that they get protection from illegal gambling. Replied “It is false in every particular, I am just there to sell goods.”
