Bedford Hocks Smith

Bedford Hocks Smith,  1849-1915

  • Bedford was born in New Brunswick. He graduated with an MA from the University of New Brunswick. After coming west, he taught school on Salt Spring Island and became principal of the Saanich School.
  • In 1884, he was appointed the first Collector of Customs in Nanaimo. He was still in this role 31 years later in 1915 when he passed.
  • In the 1881 census, listed his nationality as “Loyalist.”
