Landon, Asa

    • Thanks to Margaret Pearson I trace my direct line of ancestry back to Asa Landon, Sr., b.1736 in Salisbury, Conn., son of James Landon, Jr., b. 1711 in Southold Long Island, New York, whose father was James Landon Sr. b. 1685 in Bristol, Rhode Island and who was married to Mary Vail, b. in Southold, Long Island. The father of James Sr., was Daniel Landon.
    • Now I know that Asa Landon Sr., married Jerusha Grifface (?) I am not sure if that is the correct spelling of her name, there are variations.
    • However Asa honored king and country and that was a costly thing for him to do at the beginning of the Revolution especially since he had a prosperous farm at Salisbury, Conn.
    • Asa’s story is one of determination as he acted as a spy and guide for the British General Burgoyne when Burgoyne and his army were coming down Lake Champlain expecting a union with the British General Howe coming from New York. Someone mislaid the orders and Burgoyne went on to a royal thumping at the hands of Patriot forces.
    • The battle at Saratoga signaled the end for the British Burgoyne in that area. He advised his loyal followers to leave for home by the quickest route which our Asa hastened to obey. Had he been caught he would undoubtedly have been shot.
    • In Jessop’s affadavit for revolutionary war losses, claim was for £302 10s. –
