Allen, Charles Grant Blairfindie

Charles Grant Blairfindie Allen (Feb 24, 1848 – Oct 25, 1899) — Canadian science writer and novelist, promoter of evolution, Oxford-educated, and pioneer of early science fiction. Alkenbrack, Almonte Douglas

Alger, Ross Patterson

Meet Ross Patterson Alger (Aug 20, 1920 – Jan 16, 1992) — Calgary’s 31st mayor (1977–1980). Born in Prelate, SK, he earned a B.Comm (Univ. of Alberta), served in the RCAF in WWII, and completed an MBA at the University of Toronto before settling in Calgary as an accountant. Public service: school trustee (later chairman), alderman (1971–1974), mayor (1977–1980). Major achievements: CTrain’s first leg, Calgary’s bid for the XV Olympic Winter Games, and planning for the Olympic coliseum. Aikman, Hugh Bowlby Wilson

Meet Hugh Bowlby Wilson Aikman — lawyer, Gold Rush hopeful turned Vancouver Island settler. Trained in law at Upper Canada College, he came west for the Cariboo Gold Rush but stayed in Victoria. After years in practice, he became B.C.’s registrar-general in 1871 at age 35. He lived at the scenic Gables on Gorge Road and is buried at Ross Bay Cemetery — pictured in an unmarked grave in front of the headstone. Aikman, Frederick Alan “Butch”

Meet Frederick Alan “Butch” Aikman DFC & Bar (Mar 5, 1919 – Mar 21, 1991) — a Canadian RAF fighter ace credited with at least nine enemy aircraft destroyed. After joining No. 154 Squadron in 1942, he flew as Wing Commander Paddy Finucane’s wingman during the sortie when Finucane was lost over the Channel. Aikman scored most of his victories in North Africa and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross in Feb 1943. Honoring a brave wartime aviator. #WWII #RAF #CanadianHeroes

Adams, Marilla

Meet Marilla Adams — a trailblazing Canadian artist & educator (b. 1864, Zorro, Canada West). Trained at Alma College, Ontario School of Art, New York’s School of Design and the Art Association of Montreal, she taught in Iowa, studied in Europe, and returned to Montréal around WWI. There she taught weaving and woodcarving to wounded soldiers and championed charities aiding the underprivileged. Died Nov 2, 1966. Acorn, Milton

Meet Milton J. Acorn — “The People’s Poet.” Born on Prince Edward Island (Mar 30, 1923), Acorn served in WWII and carried its scars for life. A voice for ordinary Canadians, he won the Canadian Poets Award (1970) and the Governor General’s Award (1976) for The Island Means Minago. In 1977 he invented the Jackpine sonnet — irregular, spiky, and distinctly Canadian — weaving internal rhyme and assonance instead of fixed line counts.
