Bedford H. Smith, 1849-1915. From N.B. graduated with an MA , he taught school on Salt Spring Island and became principal of the Saanich School. In 1884, he was appointed the first Collector of Customs in Nanaimo. In the 1881 census, listed his nationality as “Loyalist.” Loyalist Ancestor: Daniel Smith, 1731 – 1816, Blissville, N.B.
