- Alathea came to the Sardis area of Chilliwack from Ontario in 1871 with her husband John Sicker. Her husband John accidentally drowned in the Luckakuck Creek in 1875. She then married Adam Vedder in 1877.
- Adam Vedder, was one of the first known farmers to settle in the Sardis area around 1860. The name “Sardis” was chosen by Alathea after the historical capital of Lydia in Turkey.
- After establishing dairy farm, Vedder served as warden of the Township of Chilliwack, a Member of the Provincial Parliament and as a Postmaster.
