- Born in Bowland, Ontario.
- He was born of Irish-Algonquin heritage and his father worked in the nickel mines of Sudbury.
- Spent his whole career in the Toronto Maple Leaf system.
- As Leaf captain for 12 years, he brought determination, leadership, and humour to a team trying to escape the shadow of the Barilko tragedy of 1951. His empty-net goal to clinch the 1967 Stanley Cup was the final goal scored in the Original Six era.
