- He studied law at Upper Canada College. Came to B.C. for the Cariboo Gold Rush, but on reaching Victoria decided to stay.
- After practicing law for some years, in 1871 (at the age of 35) he accepted the position of registrar-general for B.C.
- Occupied a mansion called The Gables on scenic Gorge Road.
- Buried at Ross Bay Cemetery. In the grave photo, he is in an unmarked grave in front of the headstone.
