- Residing in Orange County where he signed the General Association of 1775, Mathew Steel eventually went over to the British. He signed with Peter Ruttan’s company six of Associated Loyalists and was mustered in Adolphustown. He married Elizabeth, the daughter of Mathew Benson and moved to Ameliasburgh and Sophiasburgh Townships.
