Merrill, Lionel Leeland

  • Lionel Leeland Merrill (1891–1979) — Dominion President, 1954–1956, Hamilton Branch. Born May 26, 1891, Merrill joined the UELAC in 1928 and became a stalwart charter member and leader of the Hamilton Branch, of which he was also a Past President. An avid student of history, he became widely knowledgeable on Canadian and Loyalist history and during his younger years frequently spoke and wrote on these subjects. He served the national association during the mid-1930s as Dominion Vice-President and Treasurer before ascending to the presidency in 1954.
  • His career as an engineer was with the truck division of International Harvester Co., interrupted by the Second World War during which he served as Progress Officer and then as Transport Officer in the Corps of Canadian Firefighters Overseas. Beyond the UELAC, he served many years as secretary of the Hamilton Association for the Advancement of Literature, Science and Art, and was active with the Hamilton Historical Board. He continued his involvement with the Hamilton Branch well into his later years, where he was greatly revered. He died on August 13, 1979, in his 89th year.
