Grant, Major Alexander

    • Major Alexander Grant was a Scottish soldier, likely the brother of Capt James Grant, as the NY records refer to them almost interchangeably.
    • Alexander served under Wolfe at Quebec in 1759.
    • After Quebec, Alexander is noted on the tax rolls and in the courts as one of the semi-retired British officer on half-pay, who lived on Beverly Robinson’s Lot (Gore) near Pawling, and were involved in several skirmishes, as Robinson tried to displace the original settlers in favour of his officers. As the Revolution approached, he was a Lieutenant, and then a Captain who was successful in recruiting volunteers, During the American Revolution, he was promoted to Captain in the 42nd Regiment of the NY Volunteers, and took command of Loyalists on Staten Island in 1776. He was promoted to Major on April 8, 1777.
    • His wife was Sarah Kent, daughter of Elisha Kent and Abigail Moss.
    • Major Alexander Grant died in the storming of Fort Montgomery, on October 6, 1777during the American Revolution.
