    • Ensign Hermanus Best was an American Loyalist who joined the King’s Army during the American Revolution. He served as an Ensign in Captain Meyers’s Company of the Loyal Rangers (also known as Jessup’s Rangers), and he officially received his commission on May 30, 1782.
    • “A native of Albany, Best lived in Hoosick, he joined Gen. Burgoyne at Skenesboro in 1777, and served as a Lt. in Col. Foster’s Corps for the rest of the war. He settled afterwards on Lke Champlain, Nth. of the Canadian Border. Best made no claim for his land, since he hoped to recover it. He recieved half pay as an ensign. His Bro. Jacob, also joined the British Army in 1777; he died in 1783 at Carleton Is. in Canada, leaving a widow & 5 children. Hermanus claimed &74 on behalf of his brother’s family, and received &40 sterling.”
