Benson, Mathew

  • From: Voyage of a Different Kind by Larry Turner:
    • Mathew, Garret and Albert Benson may have been related. Garret and Albert were probably sons of Mathew. Mathew was credited with only two sons under ten years of age and a daughter in New York and Adolphustown but was registered with two older sons at Sorel as well as the others. All three Bensons were a part of Ruttan’s company six and were credited as Associated Loyalists on the U.E. list except for Mathew who was described merely as a member of the Orange Rangers. Mathew had lived in Bergen County, New Jersey and was aged 40 in 1776. Described as a farmer with Dutch ancestry and one patriot relative, Mathew must have lived close to the New York border to join the King’s Orange Rangers. Garret Benson was described as a farmer from New York.
